Preparing Your Kit & Harvesting Your Mushrooms

  • Stand the growing kit box on its end and open the taped side.
  • Carefully remove the contents.
  • Take a sharp knife and cut a 5mm deep slit in the bag on the black lines. These are marked on the bag to help you.
  • Return the substrate to the box, leaving the box sides open. NB: Make sure that the slit that you have cut in the plastic is in line with the open end of the box.
  • Place the misting bag over the kit. Lion’s Mane grows out and hangs down so placing the box at height will enable growth.
  • Now place the box in natural light. Do not place the box in direct sunlight and do not place it in the dark. The mushrooms grow in natural light. The ideal growing temperature for Lion’s Mane mushrooms is 10 – 18 degrees centigrade.
  • A bottle and spray have been provided for misting the mushrooms. Fill the spray bottle with boiled and cooled water.
  • Using the spray, mist the mushrooms once a day by spraying inside the misting bag provided and inside the box, to maintain humidity. When replacing the bag over the box, make sure it covers the whole box but leave a small gap of about 4 inches at the bottom to allow fresh air to circulate whilst maintaining a high humidity.
  • Once the mushrooms appear, do not spray them directly with the water as this may encourage bacteria to grow.
  • If the substrate starts to turn white in colour it is the root block (the mycelium) forming and is perfectly normal.
  • When the mushroom’s colour changes from a pinkish colour to white / cream it is ready to harvest. Carefully lift the whole body of mushroom and manoeuvre it free from the substrate.
  • Once you have finished harvesting the mushrooms, soak the substrate overnight in a bucket of cold water. Then drain the substrate block and reset the growing block up, exactly the same way as before. You should get another 1 or 2 mushroom fruitings out of the block.
  • Lions Mane can be kept clean and dry in a paper bag in the fridge for up to 3 days before spoiling.
  • Following the last harvest, the leftover soil can be used in your garden!
  • These kits are designed to be used inside family homes. The growing kits should not be placed in garden sheds, greenhouses or conservatories where the conditions are adverse to growth.
