King Oyster Mushrooms
The King Oyster Mushroom, also known as the French Horn Mushroom, is a native of the Mediterranean regions of Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. It is the largest species of the oyster mushrooms and has a wide meaty white stem and small brown cap.
The mushrooms are best grown indoors in a cool place (15-20 degrees C) and don’t require much light. The mushrooms require high humidity in order to grow so mist the box at least once a day, but make sure the gills don’t get wet.
The mushrooms take around 2-3 weeks to grow at which point they can be harvested by twisting the base of the stems. Normally, if it is undamaged, the growing substrate block can be harvested a number of times before being exhausted.
King Oyster Mushrooms have a good shelf life and can be kept in the fridge for around 10 days. They can also be cut into strips and frozen. Once frozen we recommend cooking without first thawing out.
King Oyster Mushrooms have little flavour or aroma when raw, but when cooked develop a distinctive, aromatic and savoury flavour. The mushrooms are ideal for grilling or frying and can be used as a meat substitute in casseroles.
High in minerals and protein, King Oyster Mushrooms are thought to boost the immune system and lower cholesterol.
